Terms of service

Effective 13 July 2026 · Last updated 2 October 2026 · GleanNote · gleannote.mercai.in

These Terms of Service (“Terms”) are a legally binding agreement between the developer of GleanNote (“Company”, “we”, “us”, or “our”) and you, governing your access to and use of the GleanNote mobile application and its associated software components, APIs, and cloud services (collectively, the “Service”), and this website (gleannote.mercai.in).

Acceptance: By using the Service or purchasing a subscription, you agree to these Terms and acknowledge our Privacy policy. A GleanNote account is optional and is only used for cloud sync and related cloud features. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

1. Scope of Service and License

GleanNote is a personal knowledge-management and reading companion. The Service includes:

  • Cataloging books, chapters, and manual notes and annotations.
  • On-device photo capture and optical character recognition (OCR).
  • Daily Digest, active-recall Cards, shareable insight cards, and cloud-dependent AI features such as Talk to your Book.

GleanNote is not an ebook store and does not sell copyrighted books. We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, non-sublicensable, revocable, limited license to download, install, and use the App for your own personal, non-commercial use, subject to these Terms.

2. Eligibility, Accounts, and Security

You can use the local library and capture features without an account. If you sign in for cloud sync, you are responsible for activity on your account:

  • Capacity: you must have the legal capacity to enter a binding contract under the Indian Contract Act, 1872, or the law of your home jurisdiction.
  • Credential security: you are responsible for keeping your account credentials and sign-in tokens confidential. Activity under your authenticated account is treated as your own.
  • Termination for cause: we may restrict, suspend, or terminate your account if we reasonably believe you have committed fraud, abused the system, or materially breached these Terms.

Free accounts include 3 free AI questions in total, shared across Talk to your Book and AI flashcards. Premium includes a monthly AI usage allowance. AI Max includes unlimited* AI use, subject to the fair-use limit in Section 4.4. Both are subject to technical limits. Plan features and limits may change with reasonable notice. Some features may not be available on every platform yet.

3.2 Checkout and Billing

Mobile subscriptions are currently purchased through the applicable app store and managed by our subscription-management provider. An alternate payment processor may be offered as a checkout option in some regions. The price, currency, billing period, trial eligibility, taxes, and renewal terms are always shown before you buy. You’re responsible for any taxes or charges disclosed at checkout.

3.3 Renewal and Access

Premium or AI Max access starts once the relevant billing provider confirms an active purchase or trial. Store subscriptions renew automatically unless you cancel through the applicable app store or subscription-management screen before the renewal date. Access ends when the provider reports the entitlement is no longer active.

3.4 Cancellations and Refunds

You can cancel an auto-renewing subscription through the applicable app store or subscription-management screen; cancellation normally takes effect at the end of the current paid period. Refunds are handled under the policy of the store or payment provider that processed your purchase, and any rights available to you under applicable consumer law. Deleting your GleanNote account does not automatically cancel a store subscription.

4. AI Features

4.1 How AI Requests Are Routed

Talk to your Book, cross-book chat, and AI flashcards work by sending your prompt through our backend to a third-party AI processing service, which routes the request to the language-model provider used to generate a response. AI flashcards may fall back to on-device card generation if the AI service is unavailable. Daily Digest uses a separate, deterministic ranking process and does not call an AI model.

4.2 AI Accuracy Disclaimer

No professional advice: AI models can produce incorrect, incomplete, or fabricated output (“hallucinations”). Output from the Service’s AI features is not legal, medical, financial, academic, or other professional advice. We are not liable for damages, losses, or decisions resulting from your reliance on AI-generated summaries, quizzes, or answers.

4.3 Acceptable Use of AI Features

You agree not to use the AI features to:

  • Try to extract or reconstruct the underlying system prompts, model internals, or safety guardrails of the Service.
  • Run automated scripts to scrape the Service or bypass usage quotas.
  • Submit content that infringes third-party intellectual property, or violates applicable law.

4.4 Fair Use of AI Max

AI Max includes unlimited* use of AI features, subject to a fair-use limit of 500 AI queries per calendar month (UTC). The limit exists to prevent abuse and keep the service fast for everyone. If you reach it, AI features pause until the first day of the next month (UTC); the rest of GleanNote keeps working. We may revise this limit; the current value is always shown here and in the app under Privacy → Fair use (AI Max).

*“Unlimited” means everyday AI use on AI Max is not metered against a monthly allowance; the fair-use limit above is the only cap. This is separate from copyright fair use, covered in Section 5.3.

5. Intellectual Property and Content

5.1 Your Content

You keep all rights to the notes, personal reflections, and summaries you write into the Service (“User Content”).

5.2 License to Operate the Service

To provide the features you use, you grant us and the service providers described in our Privacy policy a limited, non-exclusive license to process, format, store, and transmit your User Content only as needed to run that feature (for example, syncing your library, or passing selected note text through our backend for an AI response). This license ends when the relevant content is deleted, subject to reasonable backup, security, and legal-retention periods.

5.3 Copyright and Fair Use When Capturing Pages

Your responsibility when scanning a book: When you capture book pages with the camera or OCR, you confirm you have the right to do so — for example under Section 52 of the Indian Copyright Act, 1957 (fair dealing) or an equivalent fair-use exception where you live. GleanNote is meant as a private, personal study tool. You agree to indemnify and hold us harmless against third-party copyright claims arising from content you scanned.

When you create and share an insight card, you choose the quote, note, and attribution shown, and you’re responsible for having the right to share that content. Apps you share to process the shared image under their own terms.

5.4 Imports, Exports, and “Coming Soon” Features

GleanNote can import highlights from a Kindle Notebook export or a My Clippings.txt file that you choose, and, on plans that include it, can export your notes as Markdown files that you can bring into apps such as Notion or Obsidian. These are file imports and exports that you start yourself. GleanNote does not connect to, sync with or access your Amazon, Notion or Obsidian accounts.

Any feature labeled “Coming soon” in the App is not part of the current Service and is not guaranteed to ship.

6. Prohibited Conduct

You agree not to:

  • Decompile, reverse-engineer, or extract the source code of the App or its backend services.
  • Bypass or spoof our device-integrity or attestation checks.
  • Build unauthorized clients or wrappers that turn the App into a multi-tenant commercial API or a competing product.

7. Disclaimer of Warranties

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED “AS IS” AND “AS AVAILABLE.” TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE DISCLAIM ALL WARRANTIES, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, SECURITY, ACCURACY, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT. WE DO NOT WARRANT THAT CLOUD STORAGE OR AI FEATURES WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, SECURE, OR ERROR-FREE.

8. Limitation of Liability

TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, WE ARE NOT LIABLE FOR INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES — INCLUDING LOST PROFITS, DATA LOSS, LOSS OF GOODWILL, OR DOWNTIME — ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE.

OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM UNDER THESE TERMS WILL NOT EXCEED THE AMOUNT YOU ACTUALLY PAID US IN THE THREE (3) MONTHS BEFORE THE CLAIM AROSE, OR THE EQUIVALENT OF USD 25 (₹2,000 FOR PAYMENTS MADE IN INR), WHICHEVER IS GREATER. NOTHING IN THESE TERMS LIMITS LIABILITY WHERE THAT LIMITATION IS NOT PERMITTED BY APPLICABLE CONSUMER-PROTECTION LAW.

9. Governing Law and Disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of India, without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. Any dispute arising from these Terms or the Service is subject to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts in Bengaluru, Karnataka, India, except where applicable local consumer law gives you the right to bring a claim in your own jurisdiction.

10. Trademarks

GleanNote’s app, website and advertising refer to other companies’ products to show where GleanNote is available, how you sign in and pay, and which apps and file formats it works with. The following names, badges and icons appear for those purposes only.

Google Play and the Google Play logo are trademarks of Google LLC. Apple and the Apple logo are trademarks of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. App Store is a service mark of Apple Inc., registered in the U.S. and other countries. Amazon, Kindle, and all related marks are trademarks of Amazon.com, Inc. or its affiliates. Notion and the Notion logo are trademarks of Notion Labs, Inc. The Obsidian name, logo and app icon are trademarks of Dynalist Inc.

GleanNote is an independent product. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Google, Apple, Amazon, Notion or Obsidian. All other trademarks belong to their respective owners.

11. Changes and Severability

We may update these Terms as the Service evolves. We will announce material changes in the App or by email. Continuing to use the Service after a change takes effect means you accept the revised Terms. If a court finds part of these Terms unenforceable, the rest remains in effect.
